Why wasn't the Treaty of Paris made earlier in the American Revolution?
There were two reasons:
1. Great Britain did not agree to make the colonies free states.
2. They were very busy with war as they had to take care of army and navy.
As you the Treaty of Paris ended the war in 1781.
King George the third did not want to let go of the colonies and could not take control over them.
Britain was running out of money to run the colonies so they had to tax the colonies. They did not have any other choice other than increasing taxes. Now if they had to let go of the colonies, Britain would not have any money to run the country.
On Britain’s perspective, they had to care about another war with France. In fact, they did not have any army except the prisoners to fight the American Revolution. So, they sent the prisoners and hoped to win the war with them.
On America’s perspective, they had to make a late army. The army consisted of only voluntary soldiers. The soldiers were not experienced in fighting wars. On the other hand, they were not a foreign land and were close to home to get supplies and food.
A few years into the war, they gained some allies from France, Spain and the Jews.
There was lot of captures and death that occurred during the revolution most because of smallpox and supply shortage. Both sides had to be careful of any shortage of weapons and gun powder.
